Our Story
WaterWell and Health came into existence due to the severe change in our drinking water conditions. For many years, South Africa was one of few countries in the world where people could drink water directly from the tap anywhere in the country.
Unfortunately, this is no longer true. Dr. Anthony Turton, vice president of the International Water Resource Association, says in his research report:” … poorly functioning waste-water treatment plants are spewing close on 4 billion litres of untreated or partially treated sewage into the country’s dams and rivers every day…
Worse still, no one knows whether these technologies can in fact neutralise microcystin at the concentrations found in South Africa… a recent study by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has found that at least two thirds of South Africa’s largest dams are already eutrophic…

Turton further highlighted neurotoxin microcystin as “a massive new problem that South Africa’s water supply is currently facing”. Microcystins are toxins produced by a blue-green algae called
cyanobacteria and are ubiquitous in surface water when conditions are favourable for growth and for the formation of algal blooms.
Cyanobacteria release toxins upon cell death and have already killed a number of animals across the country that have been exposed to contaminated water.
